Sacred Space
The mounds preserved here are considered sacred by many Americans, especially the Monument's 20 culturally associated American Indian tribes. A visit offers opportunities to contemplate the meanings of the mounds and the people who built them. The 200 plus American Indian mounds are located in one of the most picturesque sections of the Upper Mississippi River Valley.

We did the all the planning to go to this unit, a unit that you have to want to see and not an easy roadside unit but sometimes the best of plans can be upset by the weather. The morning forecast had the threat of severe weather and knowing we had a short window to visit, we changed the plan up a bit. This trip we had planned on Daisy getting her BARK Ranger visit in but decided to wait on that. We headed out and found the Visitor Center after many detours due to road construction. We had a great visit with the Rangers and scored a BARK tag for Daisy. The Rangers and volunteers had so much information to offer, and we spent almost an hour talking to them. We took in the exhibits and learned a lot about the history and culture of the area. There is no movie offered, but between the Rangers and exhibits we learned more than what a movie could offer. We headed out to walk to the closest mound area no more the a few hundred yards from the Visitor Center. By this time the rain was starting, and we called it a day. There are so many trails to explore so a return day will have to be planned. We spent a few hours here but with all the trails this can easily be an all-day unit.
